garden Frerich / Erlemann, Cologne
Both the garden and the house, built in the 1960's, have been completely
redesigned. The brief was for the creation of a garden, which would
be easy to look after. This lead to the replacement of the existing
lawn with a rectangular pool surrounded by pathways and low box hedges
along the sides. A white wall to the street and to neighbouring properties
encloses the garden and gives privacy. Low walls, bands of paving,
steps and the edge of the pool are all in light coloured, surface-finished
concrete, which contrasts with the reddish-brown of the brick paving.
There are three sitting areas, which can be chosen according to the
direction of the sun or the number of guests. The dominant colour
of the flowering plants is white. With its clear layout and geometry
the garden has a classical and formal style.
