School grounds, Comprehensive school Langenfeld-Hilden
The main design characteristic of the spaces around this school is the circle, derived from the architecture of the building. A large tree (oak or lime) marks the centre of the two schoolyards. Learning here is an all-round-matter – no corners or awkward edges. The focal point of the school ground is a glass-roofed, solar house in the form of a pyramid, containing lush Mediterranean vegetation and natural building materials (a wooden deck, natural stone walls and stone paving) in contrast with the steel and glass architecture. The school grounds also comprise two large playing fields with artificial grass as well as a 100 metre track with long-jump and a small sports field with artificial surfacing.
